A parent's point of view:
One Dad recently shared
with us that he offered his daughter $5 if she wouldn't shoot during a 3 v 3 contest.
He mentioned that her team was picking up bad habits of not passing and only looking to shoot at an open goal.

Soccer is best played outdoors on natural grass. Nothing beats a day at an outdoor field, preferably 70 degrees and sunny with a slight breeze, watching your kids play the beautiful game. Unfortunately, in St. Louis, we don't have "San Diego" weather each day. Fall outdoor soccer is usually the best time of year to play. For the most part the days are not too hot or too cold and there is not as much rain. However during the cool winter months and wet spring season teams look to indoor options.
The top three playing options in St. Louis are Indoor Soccer, Indoor Futsal and Indoor 3 v 3. At The Field we believe that playing Indoor Soccer is hands down the best indoor playing alternative. In analyzing and being a spectator at all of the playing venues we believe that when compared to the MISL style Indoor game, there are many facets of the indoor futsal and 3 v 3 game that take away from the development of a great field player, goalie and superb team.
| THE INDOOR GAME | BENEFITS OF FUTSAL & 3v3 |
|
The Indoor Ball: Playing at The Field in a MISL-style indoor league standard outdoor soccer balls are used. |
The Futsal Ball: When dribbling and receiving, the low bounce does much of the work for the player because it doesn't explode away from clumsier touches like a regulation soccer ball. This lulls players into a false sense of security and allows them to get away with poor technique. When they return to playing with a regular ball, during the outdoor season, their bad habits must be broken. Also, when shooting or passing the futsal ball bounces artificially low. Consequently, upon returning to outdoor, players are less able to use the correct technique and have to discard bad habits before progressing. |
|
Walls: The walls in indoor soccer not only keep the ball in play resulting in more playing time, they also offer players a skillful alternative when pressured by an opponent. A quick pass off the wall around an opponent is one the more intelligent and skillful plays of the indoor game. |
No Walls = Less Playing Time: While many believe that playing without walls may appear to be an advantage, the opposite is actually the case. Maximum development only occurs while the ball is in play. By comparison with Indoor Soccer at The Field, both futsal and 3 v 3 wastes significantly more playing time because the ball leaves the field of play approximately 57% of the time. The clock continues to run in these games while the ball is retrieved from under the bleaches or corridors. |
|
Turf: The traditional MISL-style indoor game is played on field turf designed to simulate real soccer field grass. The soccer ball bounces more true on the field turf compared to a gym floor. Additionally the players love the indoor game on the field turf because the newer turf surfaces provide an excellent cushion for falling by the field players and diving saves by the goalie. |
No Turf: Futsal and 3 v 3 are played on smaller indoor gyms with a faster floor surface, does not simulate realistic ball placement and bounces. The harder surfaces of futsal cause more bumps and bruises. |
|
Size of the Playing Field: The Indoor Field at The Field is over 60-yards long. The size of the field also will keep the player in better physical shape. Running 60-yard sprints builds up far more endurance compared to 20-yard sprints and then doing nothing while the ball is out of play. |
Size of the Playing Field: The traditional futsal and 3 v 3 game are played on gym floors measuring less than 30 yards. As stated above, the futsal ball moves much quicker, and on a smaller field this eliminates many tactical aspects of the soccer game. The smaller field also produces poor passing habits. One argument of a smaller field is that players must make quick decisions and passes. Unfortunately this is not the case. When a player is at the center of the field they are less than 30 feet away from the goal. The urge of the player is to take a shot and not pass. In 3 v 3 this is prominent due to the fact that there is no goalie. |
|
Team Size: Ability to keep entire team together. |
Team Size: Splitting outdoor team rosters to play futsal and worse yet 3 v 3, in order to give everyone playing time, breaks up the team unity experience and causes dissent. No matter which way the players from a 14 to 18 player outdoor roster are divided someone is always unhappy. |
|
Coaching: The coach at the Indoor Soccer game is far more involved in strategy and coaching during the game. |
Coaching: Indoor Futsal and 3 v 3 do not promote open field coaching tactics. Just watch a coach at an MISL Indoor game compared to a fustal or 3 v 3 game. Also, once a team gets a lead in futsal or 3 v 3, the tactic of kicking the ball out of play is used to interrupt the flow of the game and waste time. In indoor soccer the walls largely prevent this. |
|
Spectator Excitement and Fun for Players: In Indoor where the ball is in play more than 95% of the time the fans are completely tuned into the game. Kids enjoy specifically designed MISL style indoor soccer arenas with boards and field turf surfaces far more than the multi-purpose sports hall or gym. Kids feel that they are playing the next best thing to outdoor when running, passing and shooting on a 60-yard field with turf developed to simulate real grass. |
Spectator Excitement and Fun for Players: Due to the fact that the ball is out of play more than 57% of the time in 3 v 3 and futsal the fans are bored more than ½ of the time. |
